9:03p Concerts at Edgefield
Hello all~
I am going to a concert tomorrow evening at Mcmenamin's Edgefield. I have never been there before so am unsure what to expect. Their website says that doors open at 5 and the show starts at 6. This seems VERY early to me. The show is 100% general admission so I am a bit nervous that it will be hard to get a spot. What do people usually do? (Set up a blanket, get there uber early???) Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

7:55p The Hurt Locker
I saw this movie late last year and mentioned it here--it's worth metioning again. I was going to post a trailer but none of the trailers do it justice--in fact they're misleading. This is not a typical war movie, it's an immersion in the environment of war and there is little typical about it. It's about the last month of bomb disposal unit in Bagdad before they're rotated out. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, it's not merely Bigelow's best movie, it's the best American film since There Will Be Blood. It won the Best Film prize at the Venice Film festival and it will likely be an Oscar nominee, as will Jeremy Renner, who plays Sgt. James, the lead. James is one of the best observed characters in American cinema. Guy Pearce and David Morse and Ralph Fiennes are in the movie, but it's Renner's film. On the surface he appears to be your basic alpha male, but he's as intricately wired as the devices he defuses. On top of everything else it is the most tense movie I've seen in years and maybe forever. It's amazing how involving it is and how drained it leaves you. You might want to put it on your list. Bigelow has my complete admiration. It's strange--she's built her career on action pictures featuring men (Point Break and so forth), most of them only partly successful, but she gets this absolutely right.
Found this little piece on the web:

Nice to know that the new species are preparing to take over.
Back to the grindstone.

8:11p Dentist Shout Out
for all those uninsured folks out there with a limited income and searching for a good dentist, i got one today and he's awesome. i found Gateway Dental with Dr. Joseph Sedivy. my first appt. was an exam and 1 xray for $50. i had a cracked tooth that needed to be extracted asap, which cost me $200 out of pocket. the procedure was so quick and painless. the laughing gas was included, phew. anyhow, that was my first time having to pay all out of pocket for a dental procedure and it was a pleasant experience. woo!

4:44p Free Cigar Tasting tonight - 6pm
I posted something like this a few months ago. These guys have a cigar event on the third Thursday of every month, but they are not always free.
There is a free cigar tasting tonight at Cascade Cigar & Tobacco on 82nd Avenue. The cigar they are featuring is a J. Fuego 777 and that is all the info I have. The owner usually offers discounts on boxes during the cigar tasting and sometimes there is a raffle for free stuff.
Cascade Cigar & Tobacco 9691 SE 82nd Avenue Portland, OR 97266 (you might have to enter Happy Valley as the city instead of Portland)

4:49p Help a gimpy DPer?
Dear DP,
Due to an oil slick caused by a TriMet bus on an almost blind turn, I wiped out on my scooter machine today. My ankle is full of lots of hurts and I can't really walk (or ride my scooter machine) but am in need of some groceries.
Is there any kind soul in or around the Hillsdale neighborhood in SW Portland who would be willing to get a few things for me soos I can eat?
I'll throw in a $5 tip or something (is negotiable). It'd be super helpful.
Thanks in advance!
current mood: hopeful
